Tips for using Myfitnesspal

When I start a new personal training or macro client, I always have them start by tracking. We don’t do this to be strict or rigid, but to get an honest view of what they’re already doing. This can create trust between my client and I because I truly never judge what a person eats. It just is what it is. Food should not be labeled as “good” or “bad” because it creates this negative association with food that isn’t healthy. I mean, sometimes we talk about potatoes like it’s heroin. Food just is. It’s a mixture of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

After tracking for a week or so, I can start to see what and when people like to eat. Even how a person takes their coffee, which is most important. I once had a client ask me if I was going to make her drink her coffee black. I replied “Of course not! You have to live your life!” So before you get started on your own healthy journey, here are some Myfitnesspal tips I’d like to pass on.

  1. Always track the night before or when you have a free moment. We all know we pee looking at our phones, just do it then!

  2. Once you start adding in the food you normally eat, it’ll be in your history, This makes it super easy to keep track and when you do have the time, just enter it in. Make sure to double check the serving sizes on what you have tracked, that might differ day to day.

  3. Use your food scale instead of measuring cups/spoons. Weight can be SO much more accurate than using a measuring cup or spoon, and hey - you might even be able to eat more that way!

  4. Start logging your favorite recipes. You can even enter in a website link and it’ll automatically put it in your food log for you!

  5. It might not be perfect, but you can use percentages to adjust your macros for your daily goals.

  6. Do NOT eat back the calories you’ve burned if you are trying to create a deficit. This will defeat the purpose. If you are bulking, pregnant, nursing, or trying to rebuild your metabolism this will be different for you.

  7. Realize that not every day will be perfect or accurate so log it and move on, don’t say F it.

Below I have attached my Youtube video explaining these a little bit more in detail. I hope this helps! Please leave any questions you might have below.
